First cycling bridge in Jurong West opens, connecting residents to Jurong Innovation District

Jurong Innovation District is now a pleasant walk or bike ride away for Jurong West residents, thanks to the opening today of a new pedestrian and cycling bridge across the Pan Island Expressway, connecting these residents to employment opportunities and green spaces in the burgeoning district.

Built by JTC, the bridge, spanning 110m in length and 8m in width, is one of a kind. The only cycling-permitted pedestrian bridge across the PIE in Singapore, it is double the width of a typical bridge and is equipped with dedicated walking and cycling paths, providing a connection to the Round Island Route park connector. Fitted with two lifts at both ends to transport pedestrians and cyclists vertically, it is also the first overhead bridge in Jurong West to allow cyclists to cycle across without having to dismount and push their bicycles. To make it more useful and pleasant for both cyclists and pedestrians, the iconic bridge features a sheltered walkway and side planters for greenery and improved aesthetics.

The bridge was officially opened during a community event today by Mr Desmond Lee, Minister for National Development, Minister-in-charge of Social Services Integration and Adviser to West Coast GRC Grassroots Organisations; Mr Ang Wei Neng, Adviser to West Coast GRC Grassroots Organisations (Nanyang) and Vice-Chairman of South West Community Development Council; and Mr Tan Boon Khai, Chief Executive of JTC. To mark the occasion, some 1,000 Jurong West residents traversed the bridge to JTC's CleanTech Park. There, they engaged in activities at CleanTech Three such as a treasure hunt, longkang fishing, pottery ornament painting and a pet bazaar. The event also showcased the amenities at CleanTech Park, Thow Kwang Dragon Kiln, and the broader Jurong Innovation District, familiarising residents with these new developments.

The bridge's inauguration significantly enhances connectivity for approximately 63,000 Jurong West residents. It provides easier access to several key locations such as Jurong Eco-Garden, Nanyang Technological University, the forthcoming MRT station at CleanTech Park, and the SJ Campus within the Jurong Innovation District (JID). Notably, the bridge reduces walking time to JID by about 35 minutes, markedly improving commuter convenience. (See annex for infographic and recreational and connectivity amenities in JID.)

Said Mr Tan Boon Khai, Chief Executive, JTC, “This bridge marks a milestone in JTC's goal to connect communities and bring employment closer to residential areas within Jurong West. The bridge will enhance the work-live-learn-play balance for residents by making it easier for them to access JID. It will also encourage more walking and cycling, aligning with our vision for a car-lite JID. Together with the upcoming Sky Corridor and future MRT station at CleanTech Park, the bridge will revolutionise mobility and improve connectivity, linking residents to job opportunities, nature and ecosystems in JID.”
